Alonso wants to move again.

Fernando Alonso has hinted that he could be open for offers to race for a new team at the end of the 2008 F1 season.

The former world champion returned to Renault from McLaren at the end of last season after a year of controversy with the team and Lewis Hamilton. Alonso went back to Renault hoping to rebuild a winning relationship, but the team has an uncompetitive car so Alonso is now showing an interest in Ferrari. But will Ferrari show an interest in Alonso?

Will Ferrari consider replacing Kimi? He's currently the world champion and has a good chance at winning the championship again this year. What about Massa? Hes always been the So called number 2 driver for Ferrari and he does a good job supporting Kimi and the team, And is also an extremely good driver who can win the world championship.

The other thing is, Does anybody other than Flavio Briatore (Renault) really want Fernando Alonso? He has shown everybody that he can be extremely petty and doesn't like it if hes not the center of attention. His year at McLaren really showed how petty he can be.

Alonso is a very good race driver, Definitely one of the best this decade has seen, But there is no "I" in team.

Mini Panel Van.

The iconic Mini Cooper went through a transformation in 2001 and became a Mini for the new millennium.

And they have done it again this time with the Mini Panel Van giving drivers 24 centimeters more room in the back.

It's a reincarnation of the popular mini vans of the 1960s - a panel van, without the panels but a bit of extra room and an ingenious half a door.

The new BMW versions of the Mini have been driving the traditionalists mad since 2001 and this one is likely to do the same.

But some people can't get enough of these tiny hotrods. Power comes from a turbocharged 1.6L 16-valve light alloy engine with direct injection and delivers 172-hp.

The MINI Clubman is a separate model now available to order in Cooper, Cooper D, and Cooper S variations. It is several inches longer to accommodate more leg room and a larger boot. It has double doors as a boot instead of a pull up boot. It also features a suicide door on the right side for passengers in the back.

The name 'Clubman' is a break with classic Mini tradition. The classic Mini Clubman was a saloon car with a squarer front end but a standard Mini rear end. The estate van versions of the classic Mini were called 'Mini Traveller' and 'Mini Countryman'. However, BMW did not purchase the rights to use those names when they bought the rights to the other Mini names.

I don't know if i would ever buy one though, It still seems to small, I couldn't imagine trying to pull a boat or a car on a trailer with a mini. I prefer the big American or Australian V6s and V8s.

Passport control, New Technology

If you've ever come off a long flight and had to stand tired and crumpled in a queue for passport control, you'll appreciate the logic behind Smartgate, the latest attempt at airport automation.

It's a system that lets arriving passengers with biometric-enabled passports (ePassports) check themselves through immigration and customs at computer kiosks. It has been trialled at Brisbane airport and will get a test run at Wellington (NZ) airport in the coming months.

It works like this: when you get off the plane instead of joining a queue at passport control you go to an ePassport terminal and swipe your passport through it.

The computer uploads a digital photo of your face, asks you the types of standard questions immigration and customs officers are likely to and prints a ticket for you. As you progress through the airport you come to another kiosk where you enter your ticket.

Three cameras simultaneously scan your face and, using facial-recognition software that measures the structure of your facial features and the space between them, decides whether you are the person the computer thinks you are. If there's a match, you're on your way.

There were a few hiccups last year in getting the technology working properly, mainly due to integrating the ePassport system with different kiosks and readers around airports.

Probably, but the system will take years to implement on a global system - New Zealand, for its part, wants the system in place for trans-Tasman travel by the 2011 Rugby World Cup. I look forward to checking out the system at Wellington Airport - once I get an ePassport.

There are also some changes in the air when it comes to in-flight communications. Qantas, by the end of the year, will let passengers on certain Australian domestic routes send and receive SMS messages and emails. In the states however, there's a big push underway to rekindle the market for broadband in the air, with Aircell using its technology on American Airlines and Virgin America flights to offer Wi-Fi access to passengers priced from US$10 for a trip lasting up to three hours.

I like the idea of having email and web-access in the air ever since i first used the in seat entertainment system many years ago. Voice calls from the air are of less interest to me. I'd rather not sit there listening to someone else's mid-air phone call and I'm sure the feeling would be mutual with many passengers.

20th anniversary HSV W427

Holden Special Vehicles is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with a V8-powered show car that redefines Australian muscle machines and will become the fastest car ever produced in Australia.

Revealed at the Melbourne motor show, the HSV W427 is a Commodore based four-door with a 7.0 litre engine producing 370kW of power, which is almost 500 horsepower in the old scale.

A mildly different production version of the W427 show car – a one-off concept created for the motor show – will go on sale towards the middle of 2008 priced somewhere between $A140,000 and $A170,000, The Unique styling gives the HSV W427 a more aggressive nose characterized by a V8 Supercar-inspired bumper and larger grille designed to feed more air into the engine.

The HSV W427 can accelerate to 100km/h in about 4.7 seconds, matching similar explosive acceleration figures from more expensive vehicles such as the BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and upcoming Audi RS6.

The HSV W427 is fitted with a US-sourced 7.0-litre V8 which is also used in the Chevrolet Corvette and a unique two-mode exhaust system is designed to improve the characteristic V8 engine sound. The 20-inch alloy wheels partially hide even bigger six-piston AP brake calipers said to provide supreme stopping potential. The HSV W427 is also fitted with the latest Holden safety features, including an electronic stability control system and six airbags.

"W" InW427 is a reference to Tom Walkinshaw who was the HSV (Holden special Vehicles) Founder, And the number 427 relate to the size of the engine in cubic inches.

The interior is all covered in leather, Including, Seats, Steering Wheel, Parts of the dashboard, Door handles and gear lever surrounds.

There will only be Four HSV W427s produced per week and each is made to order only. They will all be individually numbered and accompanied by a unique customer loyalty program.
There’s little doubt in my mind that the HSV W427 is destined to become the most desirable, and one of the most exclusive HSVs ever built. I'm sure the Ford fans will beg to differ though.

The Birds nest.

The biggest event this year has to be the Olympic games to be held in Beijing, China. With the slogan One World, One Dream, the Games of the XXIX Olympiad will draw thousands of athletes from around the world to compete in 302 events in 28 sports.

I am looking forward to seeing the two new structures that are sure to become architectural icons, the new Beijing National Stadium, also known as the "Bird's Nest" because of its architecture, and the Beijing National Aquatic Center which i will write about in a future post.

The National Stadium is the main stadium of the 29th Olympic Games, It has a floor space of 258,000 sq meters with 91,000 seats, and cost over 420 million USD. This stadium will host the main track and field competitions as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.

Construction was supposed to be complete in march this year, but in January this year there were concerns about construction working conditions and it had been revealed that 10 construction workers died during the stadium's construction.

IRB's New laws.

We are only four weeks into the super 14 rugby season and of course this year has several rule changes that are supposed to speed up the game, So far it seems to be working, the Super 14 is definitely showing us that they produce a faster and more action packed game. So why wont the Northern Hemisphere adopt the new rules? The rules that are still being used in the northern hemisphere are 30 years old.

Ive watched many of the 6 nations games this year and after seeing the rules in the super 14, Ive found that the old rules definitely produce a slower game. The new rules promote more attacking rugby and more tries.

But later on this year, there is the issue of players having to switch between the old and new rules within the season. The Super 14 is being played under the new laws, But there are tests against visiting Northern Hemisphere teams under the old laws, Then the New Zealand, Australian and South African players have to make a switch back to the new laws for the Tri-Nations, and again back to the old laws for the end of year tours up north. I think the northern hemisphere will definitely have an advantage.

How soon can the IRB, who pushed for the Super 14 to trial the new laws, take to decide in which direction they intend to take rugby, If they go with the new rules the northern teams will need time to prepare and adjust to the new rules. The next Rugby world cup is in 2011.

For those of you that haven't seen a super 14 game this season, I suggest you do if you get a chance, Its alot faster, You'll wonder why the northern hemisphere haven't changed aswell.

All about Drifting.

Drifting has become very well known and extremely popular worldwide, And yet still alot of people don't understand the rules to competition drifting. I hope i can make things a little clearer for those interested to find out.

Competitions are judged on line, angle, speed, and show factor. Line involves taking the correct line which is announced before a race meeting and is announced by the judges. Angle is the angle of a car in as it drifts/slides around a corner, Speed is judged by the speed through a turn aswell as the speed entering and exiting a turn. Show factor is based on the amount of smoke, how close the car is to the wall, and the crowd's reaction.

There are two sessions, a qualifying/practice session, and a final session. During qualifying drifters get individual passes in front of the judges to try and make the final 16.

The finals are tandem passes, or chase attack. Drivers are paired off, and each heat consists of two passes, with each driver taking a turn to lead. The best of the 8 heats go to the next 4, to the next 2, to the final. The passes are judged as explained above.

Here are a few more of the rules that can give you a win or a loss instantly, Overtaking the lead car under drift conditions almost always wins that pass, Increasing the lead under drift conditions helps to win that pass. Spinning forfeits that pass, unless the other driver also spins. Overtaking the lead car under grip conditions automatically forfeits that pass.

Points are awarded for each pass, On the odd occasion there can be a tie and the race will be run again. Sometimes mechanical failure determines the battle's outcome, either during or before a heat. If a car cannot enter a tandem battle, the remaining entrant will give a solo demonstration pass.

The most common drift cars are light to moderate weight, rear-wheel-drive coupes and sedans. Nissan Silvia's, Toyota AE86, Mazda RX-7, Nissan Cefiro, Nissan Laurel, Nissan Skyline (RWD versions), Toyota Altezza, Toyota Chaser, Toyota Soarer, Honda S2000 and the Toyota Supra.

Diamonds for your loved one.

The world's most expensive MP3 player which is made of solid 18 carat gold and has 430 diamonds has been auctioned for charity, The iDiamond and matching earphones is the world's most expensive MP3 player which recently sold at an auction for £20,000 by a British businessman who wanted to remain anonymous, for obvious reasons i suppose.

The super-bling iDiamond is built by Heyerdahl Jewelery and based on an iPod shuffle. But the costly music player built is unfortunately a one-off (Or should i say fortunately a one off) Heyerdahl also make limited edition iDiamond earphones, with 18 carat gold and 204 diamonds.

World of Outlaws.

Sprint cars are high-powered race cars designed for running on short oval or circular dirt or paved tracks. Sprint car racing is mostly popular in the United States, New Zealand.and Australia. Some of the Americans from the world of outlaws series travel to Western Springs in Auckland, New Zealand every year to compete with the best that New Zealand has to offer, Unfortunately the New Zealanders cant keep up with the Americans which proves that the world of outlaws series in America is the number dirt track series in the world. You can see the full results of the meeting in December 2007 at springsspeedway.com

Sprint cars have a very high power-to-weight ratio, making speeds in excess of 140 miles per hour (230 km/h) possible on some tracks. These speeds make racing sprint cars extremely dangerous. 800 horsepower is common for these at a weight of around 1400 pounds and fueled by Methanol. Wheelbase ranges from 84 inches min, 90 inches max, and overall width is 78 inches maximum with an overall length of 14 feet maximum.

A typical sprint car costs between US$50,000 and US$60,000 and most teams have a separate car for pavement and dirt tracks.

The safety record of sprint car racing in recent years has been greatly improved by the use of roll cages to protect the drivers. Wings provide down force, increasing traction. Wings also provide an amount of protection in case of an accident.

F1 2008 underway.

My view of the first Qualifying for the 2008 Formula 1 season.

To tell you the truth , I thought it was boring, The Qualifying format has changed from last year.

This years consists of :-
(Q1) A 20 minute session, The bottom 6 of 22 knocked out.
(Q2) A 15 minute session to knockout another 6 leaving 10 drivers.
(Q3) A 15 minute session in which the top 10 go for the quickest lap and start in that order.

My opinion is that Q3 is alot better than last year because there is no fuel burning stage, However Q1 and Q2 are too long, There are too many times where there is no racing on track.

However, It seems that McLaren are still a dominant team in the championship with Lewis Hamilton Qualifying on pole and his team mate Qualifying in 3rd, But a big surprise to me was Robert Kubica in the BMW Sauber qualifying in 2nd position.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen was sidelined after fuel pump problems in Q2, Which meant Ferrari's only hope was Massa who only managed 4th position on the grid.

Its a long season and anything can happen, I have my Favorite team and driver, so good luck to everybody that follows the F1. May the best team and Man win.

Futuristic Skyscrapers.

I came across an article today about futuristic skyscrapers, Apparently a Korean company called Heerim Architects have developed two skyscrapers of the future, Which are said to both be Hotels.

Their projects are Full Moon Bay and Caspian Plus, They are apparently going to be built in Baku, Azerbaijan. The inspiration for both of the skyscrapers came from the moon.

The Full Moon Hotel has a shape like a disc and it will be covered in hexagonal honeycombs, and it will feature a hole situated close to the top. The architects specified that the design could be changed because it’s very possible that the construction will need some reinforcements.

Full Moon will be a 35-storied luxury hotel reaching about 158 meters height which will feature nearly 400 rooms in about 104,000 square meters of space.

Hotel Crescent will be a part of the Caspian Plus and the name came from the fact that it looks like a crescent moon. The building will also be a luxury hotel but with three stores less and will feature nearly 130,000 square meters of space enough for over 200 rooms.

If anybody can give me more details on this article please leave me a comment.

Microsoft / Blu-Ray???

According to a report in the Financial Times. Microsoft is already in talks to adopt Sony's Blu-ray high-def DVD technology for its Xbox 360 console. However, Microsoft have denied that it was negotiating with Sony. Microsoft was put on the spot after Toshiba bowed out of the high-definition DVD fight with Sony a few weeks ago.

The British business newspaper reported that Microsoft was already in discussions with rival Sony to license Blu-ray for the 360 which is putting Microsoft in the unusual position of having to pay a market rival to use its technology. It also said that there was a possibility that a Blu-ray drive would be incorporated into a new, high-end version of the games machine.

Microsoft had backed the wrong horse in the format race, Toshiba's HD DVD technology, over Sony's Blu-ray. However, Microsoft, with its Xbox 360 games console competing directly with Sony's PlayStation3 probably made the right commercial decision at the time.

While the PS3 comes standard with a Blu-ray drive onboard, the Xbox 360 has a standard DVD drive, a plug-in HD DVD unit was the only way to get high-def content out of the console, So it comes as no surprise to find out that Last week the software giant had no choice but to pull the pin on the drives.

Master Card Wedding

You got to love this guy... This is a true story about a recent wedding that took place at Clemson University. It was in a local newspaper and even Jay Leno mentioned it. It was a huge wedding with about 300 guests.

After the wedding, at the reception, the groom got up on stage with a microphone to talk to the crowd.
He said he wanted to thank everyone for coming, many from long distances, to support them
at their wedding.

He especially wanted to thank the bride's and his family and to thank his new father-in-law for providing such a lavish reception.

As a token of his deep appreciation he said he wanted to give everyone a special gift just from him.

So taped to the bottom of everyone's chair, including the wedding party was an envelope.

He said this was his gift to everyone, and asked them to open their envelope.

Inside each manila envelope was an 8x10 glossy of his bride having sex with the best man.

The groom had gotten suspicious of them weeks earlier and had hired a private detective to tail them.

After just standing there, just watching the guests' reactions for a couple of minutes, he turned to the best man and
said, 'F---you!' Then he turned to his bride and said, 'F--- you!'

Then he turned to the dumbfounded crowd and said, 'I'm outta here.'

He had the marriage annulled first thing in the morning.

While most people would have canceled the wedding immediately after finding out about the affair, this guy goes through with the charade, as if nothing were wrong.

His revenge--making the bride's parents pay over $32,000 for a 300-guest wedding and reception, and best of all, trashing the bride's and best man's reputations in front of 300 friends and family members.

This guy has balls the size of church bells.

Do you think we might get a MasterCard 'priceless' commercial out of this?
Elegant wedding reception for 300 family members and friends: $32,000.
Wedding photographs commemorating the Occasion: $3,000
Deluxe two-week honeymoon accommodations in Maui : $8,500.
The look on everyone's face when they see the 8x10 glossy of the bride humping the best man: Priceless.

There are some things money can't buy, for everything else there's MASTERCARD.

Alfa Romeo 8C going topless.

Alfa Romeo, Fiat's sports car brand, plans to commemorate its centenary in 2010 with a new model, a special edition of which only 500 are being sold.

Alfa Romeo have always been known for a style and speed, Alfa Romeo's sales have been mediocre for mant years and it struggles to gain more than one per cent of its main European market and it has been losing money for quite some time. A history of poor parts and service gave it a bad name which it has found hard to get rid of and denying it the premium status enjoyed by rivals like Volkswagen's Audi and BMW.

The 8C is definitey an upmarket Alfa, With a hefty price tag of $240,000, That makes it the most expensive Alfa Romeo road car ever built. The engine is a 4.7 liter Maserati V-8. Alot of the suspension components are also from Maserati, This would explain why its built in the Maserati factory instead of the Alfa Romeo factory. But wait----- the engine comes from Ferrari, and it comes from F430 technology. So the Alfa Romeo 8C represents three of Italy's greatest car manufacturers (all Fiat owned) sports car manufacturers.

Keep it clean.

I don't know how many people out there follow or are even interested in the Americas cup, But here in New Zealand there is a huge following, Maybe this is because the majority of teams consist of many New Zealanders, But news here this morning says that Team New Zealand is suing Swiss holders Alinghi for delaying the next regatta.

The America's Cup has been in court for months since US team BMW Oracle claimed Alinghi set unfair rules for the next Cup with an illegitimate challenger. The New York Supreme Court ruled in favour of Oracle and Alinghi has appealed.

Team New Zealand, who lost last year's America's Cup to Alinghi in a thrilling 5-2 series in Valencia, laid the same charges at the Swiss team's door, saying the rules were "completely one-sided". Team New Zealand had also asked for financial compensation in the "tens of millions of euros" now that ACM has delayed the next America's Cup indefinitely.

Alinghi said they were disappointed by Team New Zealand's action, saying they were committed to getting the event back on track.

Team New Zealand challenged for the 33rd America's Cup on the condition it would be raced in 2009 in Valencia.

Instead it is now locked in lawyers' offices and is unlikely to be raced before 2011, possibly after a head-to-head between Alinghi and BMW Oracle, depending on the outcome of that case.

Grant Dalton from team New Zealand said that not only did the delay mean teams had to stretch two-year budgets over three or four years but also that potential sponsors who were wowed by the 32nd America's Cup have been put off the event by all the bickering since. There's a lot of confusion. He has also said Alinghi could easily have avoided the delay by accepting a settlement BMW Oracle proposed after they won the first case and which was agreed by most of the other teams who had challenged for the next Cup.

While some America's Cup teams like Alinghi and BMW Oracle are backed by billionaires and spent more than 100 million Euros on the last Cup, others are fully reliant on sponsorship and work on as little as a tenth of the big boys' budget.

Its time to write the rules the way of every other sporting event at world cup status. Decide on boat length, Height etc and set a time that the Americas cup will take place. E.G Every 4 years just like the majority of the major sporting events world wide. Cut out all of this court room billionaire wins rubbish and get on with it.

2008 is the year of PS3.

The Nintendo Wii is continuing to beat the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in sales, However, analysts are predicting that the Wii may have had its time in front, and should now prepare to hand over to one its rivals.

Last month, analysts at iSuppli predicted that the Playstation 3 will overtake the Wii in total unit sales and become the market leader. They have since gone one step further, and predicted that 2008 will be the year that Sony will one day look back on as the 'turning year' for the Playstation 3.

Nintendo has sold four times as many Wiis in January than PS3s, Will 2008 be the turning year for the Playstation 3?

Sony is offering a better software pipeline with blockbuster titles like Gran Turismo 5, which will boost PS3 sales this year.

Sony are anticipating price reductions on the Playstation 3 this year, and come Christmas, consumers who originally bought the Wii will likely purchase the PS3.

Sales of the PS3 are expected to increase not only due to increased affordability and a wider range of quality games, but also because it is a cheap Blu-ray DVD player.

Now that HD wars are over and HD DVD is the loser, more consumers are likely to make the switch to high definition, and the PS3 is as good a first Blu-ray player as any.
